Kerala Merchants Chamber of Commerce(KMCC) - the pioneer, action oriented traders' union in the state, started functioning originally under the banner "Ernakulam Bazar Merchants' Union", in 1973. It was formed as a result of the intense need to have an organisation of the trading community for collectivity facing the threats and challenges mounted against the traders from various centers. The ideas, ideals and the ringing slogans of the Kerala Merchants Chamber of Commerce(KMCC) and its dominant leadership role inspired the traders in other areas too, to unite and give shape to organised movements. The strength of the members of the Merchants Union is around 4000 and it is the largest, single traders', organisation in the state.

Welfare - The Main Objective
The Kerala Merchants And Chamber of Commerce is a registered, not-for-profit, independent and democratic organisation functioning above political, religious and communal considerations. It works for strengthening the Unity and cementing the solidarity of traders. Welfare of the traders and industrialists in the private sector in particular and the society in general, is the main objective of the organisation.
Protection of rights
As an action oriented organisation, the Kerala Merchants Chamber of Commerce(KMCC) has successfully led many democratic agitations protect the interests and rights of the traders and gained creditable achievements. It has always been vigilant to resist the inroads into the rights of the traders. The Union is vigorously continuing its collective efforts, campaigns and programmes for the development of trade and industry and there by contributing to the betterment of the state economy.
Social Commitmnents
Social Commitment has always been the hall-mark of Kerala Merchants Chamber of Commerce(KMCC). It is actively participating in social welfare, development and charitable activities. Besides activities in co-operation and collaboration with central and state Government departments, local Self-Government, development agencies and sister organisations, the Merchants' Union has been organising cleaning campaigns, public health improvement programmes, eye donation and blood donation campaigns. The union is making contributions / donations to the hospitals, poor homes and financial assistance for medical treatment of people belong to weaker sections and distributing awards to toppers at various examinations. The renovation of the maternity ward of the Ernakulam Government Hospital was a significant project undertaken and completed by the Merchants' Union. The Merchants' Union is active in the fields of arts and sports. The annual competitions in different sports such as, Cricket, shuttle, Foot ball etc. conducted by the Union are very popular.
Labour Scenario
The Merchants' Union is actively engaged in conciliation and settlement of labour disputes with the co-operation of trade Unions. Its unique and empowered position to negotiate with trade Unions for renewal of the agreement on wages and Service conditions of workers adds to the status and credibility of the organisation. The functioning of the street-wise joint comities consisting of the representatives of traders and trade Unions-a novel experiment initiated and introduced by the Merchants' Union-is found successful.
Youth wing
The Kerala Merchants Chamber of Commerce(KMCC) Youth Wing initiated and implemented several social welfare and charitable schemes such as renovation of mortuary of the Ernakulam Government General Hospital, beautification of roads, and free distribution of study tools to the poor and needy students. It promotes talents and leadership qualities of young traders. The Kerala Merchants' Union Cup-All Kerala Day & Night Indoor Cricket Tournament conducted by the Youth Wing every year has become a star event of outstanding singularity. The dynamic and vibrant youth wing acts as a supportive force in the various activities / programmes of the Merchants' Union
